The Right Endoscope for the Right Purpose

Endoscopes are devices used across a broad spectrum of applications including medicine, industry and research. The scope is often connected to a strong light source via a fiber optics cable. Currently, integrated LED light sources are of increasing popularity and are allowing scopes to be portable and easier to maneuver into hard-to-reach areas.

In both medical and industrial applications, endoscopes can be used in conjunction with tools to allow real-time visualization and repair.

Endoscopes in Human Medicine

Endoscopes play a vital role in the medical field. With the aid of endoscopes, hard to reach organs and regions of the body can be accessed and visualized, allowing otherwise hidden areas of disease or injury to be revealed. Originally, endoscopes were developed for diagnostic and therapeutic applications, but now, endoscopes are used in minimally-invasive interventional procedures and also assist doctors in planning for invasive conventional surgeries.

Upper and lower airways (ENT, pulmonology), the digestive tract (gastroenterology), spine and joints (orthopedics, arthroscopy), reproductive and urinary systems (gynecology, urology) and other body cavities can be reached with endoscopes. Various sizes (i.e. length, diameter) and types (i.e. rigid, flexible) of endoscopes are utilized among various specialties, depending on the application. Medical endoscopy, with its clear advantages, is constantly developing and new applications are continually being discovered.

Industrial Endoscopy / Technical Endoscopy

Endoscopes also serve the industrial sector with their advantage of reaching difficult areas. Maintenance, repair and inspection can all be carried out more efficiently using various sizes of endoscopes and tools. For example, plumbing and HVAC systems for buildings and auto exhaust systems can be easily inspected for hidden wear or damage with endoscopes without having to completely shut down the system or dismantle the pipes. Hobbyists also enjoy the advantages of endoscopes in detailed and complex projects.
