Because of bipolar instruments' potential to reduce accidental burns, several instrument companies introduced their models of bipolar forceps as early as 1974. The Kleppinger forceps was one of the original designs.

The Richard Wolf bipolar forceps was designed as a complete system. Working with bioelectrical engineers, Kleppinger married his forceps design to the electrical output characteristics of a generator designed only for bipolar surgery. Today this instrument is considered the "gold standard" of bipolar systems worldwide (Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, Sept/Oct 2007).
